From Abu Al-Tufail, who said: When the Messenger of Allah (SAW) was coming back from the raid on Tabuk, He ordered a herald to annouce that the Messenger of Allah (SAW) had gone by way of Al-‘aqaba, and that no one was to go this way. And while Hudhaifa was leading the Messenger of Allah (SAW) and ‘Ammar was driving the camels, behold a group of masked men came out upon the camels, enclosing in on ‘Ammar while he was driving for the Messenger of Allah (SAW). But ‘Ammar advanced, striking the faces of the camels. And the Messenger of Allah (SAW) said to Hudhaifa: “Whoa whoa!” so the Messenger of Allah (SAW) could slow down. When the Messenger of Allah (SAW) slowed down, He dismounted, and ‘Ammar returned. And He said: Oh ‘Ammar, did you recognize those people? He said: I generally recognized the camels but the people were masked. He said: Do you know what they were after? He said: Allah and His Messenger know better. He said: They wanted to force the Messenger of Allah (SAW) off the road and throw him down. So ‘Ammar affronted one of the Companions of the Messenger of Allah (SAW) and said: I adjure you by Allah – from what you know, how many were there of these guys at Al’aqaba? He said: Fourteen. And He said: If you were among them then there were fifteen of them! And the Messenger of Allah (SAW) counted three of them who said: We swear by Allah we didn’t hear the Messenger of Allah’s (SAW) herald, and we didn’t know what the people were after. I testify that the twelve who remained have warred against Allah and His Messenger in this world.
