‘Abdullah said: The Messenger of Allah (SAW) related to us – and He is the truthful one, the one proven truthful – and He said: Indeed each of you all is gathered in his mother’s womb for forty days, and then similarly [forty days] a clot of blood, and then he is similarly a lump of flesh, then Allah sends out an angel who is ordered four things – his provision, his lifespan, and whether he is to be wretched or joyous; and I swear by Allah that any one of you – or a man – may do the deeds of the people of hellfire, to the point where there is not even an armspan or arm’s length between him and hellfire, but then what is decreed over him takes precedence, and he does the deeds of the people of Jannah and enters Jannah; and indeed a man may do the deeds of the people of Jannah, to the point where there is not even an arm’s length or two between him and Jannah, but then what is decreed over him takes precedence, and he does the deeds of the people of hellfire and enters hellfire.
