… We journeyed with the Messenger of Allah (may Allah pray over him and salute him) until settling down in a wide-open valley, and the Messenger of Allah (SAW) went to relieve himself. I followed him with a small leather bottle of water. And the Messenger of Allah (SAW) looked around but did not find anything with which to shield himself. But there were two trees at the edge of the valley, so the Messenger of Allah (SAW) went over to one of them, grabbed one of its branches, and said: “Follow me, with the permission of Allah.” And so it followed after him, like a camel with a wooden peg in its nose to make it obedient to its master, until He reached the other tree; and He grabbed one of its branches and said: “Follow me, with the permission of Allah.” And so it followed after him in the same way, until when He was in between both trees, He bound them, that is, He brought them together, and said: “Draw close around me, with the permission of Allah.” And so they drew close. Jabir said: I left to go and bring it, afraid that the Messenger of Allah (SAW) might sense that I was close and move away, and I sat down and started talking to myself. Then I turned around, and saw the Messenger of Allah (SAW) approaching. And the two trees had separated, each now on its trunk. And I saw the Messenger of Allah (SAW) stop for a moment and motion with his head like this (Abu Isma’il gestured back and forth with his head). Then He approached, and when He reached me He said: “Oh Jabir, did you see where I was?” I said: “Yes, Messenger of Allah.” He said: “Go out to the two trees, cut a branch from each of them, bring them back until you get to where I was, and leave a branch on your right and a branch on your left.”
