Ibn Shihab related from Salim and Kharija that Abu Bakr Al-Siddiq (may Allah be pleased with him) compiled the Qur’an on sheets of paper, and asked Zaid ibn Thabit to have a look at it, but he refused until Abu Bakr sought the aid of ‘Umar, which he did. And the books were with Abu Bakr until he passed away, then with ‘Umar until he passed away, then they were with Hafsah the wife of the Prophet (SAW). And ‘Uthman sent for them, but she refused to hand them over to him until he promised to return them to her. So she sent them to him. And ‘Uthman copied them into the copies we have, then returned them to her, and they remained with her until Marwan sent for them and took them and burned them.
