Abdullah ibn ‘Abd Al-Hakam and Ashhab related from Malik regarding the word of the Most High: { What is there after truth but delusion? } ; he said: “Playing chess and games of dice [al-nard] is dalal [delusion, aberration].” And Yunus related from Ibn Wahb that he was asked about if a man plays Fourteen [old Arab board game] with his woman at home, and Malik said: “I don’t like it! And it is not fitting for Believers; Allah Most High said: { What is there after truth but delusion? }” And Yunus related from Ashhab who said: “He – that is, Malik – was asked about playing chess, and he said: ‘There is nothing good in it, it is worthless, and it is vain, and all games are vain, and indeed his beard and gray hair ought to keep any rational man away from vain things.’” And Al-Zuhri said, when he was asked about chess: “That is something vain and I do not like it.”
