Mus’ab Al-Zubairi said: Abdullah ibn Abi Umayyah was harsh towards the Muslims, and he was the one who said to the Prophet (SAW): { We will not believe in you until you make a spring gush forth from the earth for us } [Al-israa 90]. He was harsh in enmity towards him, then Allah guided him to Islam, and he emigrated before the fath [conquest]. He went to meet up with the Prophet (SAW) at the edge of Mecca, he and Abu Sufyan ibn Al-Harith. Related to this, Ibn Ishaq mentioned and said: The two of them sought to go in to see him, but He blocked them. Then Umm Salama spoke to him and said: “Oh Messenger of Allah, your paternal cousin” – she meant Abu Sufyan – “and your maternal cousin” – she meant Abdullah. But He said: “I have no need for them – as for my paternal cousin, he ravished my honour [hataka ‘irdy, "he ripped my body", i.e. he raped me], and as for my maternal cousin, he said to me the stuff he said to me in Mecca." But then He gave them permission, and they entered, and became Muslims, and were present for the fath, for Hunayn, and for Ta’if.
