Abdullah Ibn Mas’ud (may Allah be pleased with him) said: The Messenger of Allah (SAW) said to his Companions when He was in Mecca: “Whoever of you would like to go and see what’s going on with the Jinn tonight, let him come.” But none of them went to see except me. And we set out until we were at the high point of Mecca; He traced a line for me with his foot, then ordered me to sit down inside it. Then He set out until he stood in one position, and began to recite the Qur’an. And a multitude of dark figures shrouded him, and got between me and him, so that I could no longer hear his voice. Then they went and began to disperse like clouds and leave, until only a group of them remained. Then the Messenger of Allah (SAW) finished prayers at dawn and went off and defecated [tabarraz]. And He came back to me and said: “What did the group of them do?” I said: “Those are them, oh Messenger of Allah.” And He gave them some bones and dung as food, then forbade anyone from using dung or bones to wipe themselves with.
… Abdullah ibn ‘Amru ibn Ghailan Al-Thaqafi related that he asked Ibn Mas’ud (may Allah be pleased with him): “You said that you were with the Messenger of Allah (SAW) on the night He went to see the Jinn?” He replied: “Yes I was!” He said: “And how was it?” And so he related the story and told how the Prophet (SAW) traced a line around him and said: “Don’t step outside this.” And he mentioned something like a black cloud of dust that shrouded the Messenger of Allah (SAW), and he got terrified three times, until when it was close to morning, “the Prophet (SAW) came to me and said: ‘Did you sleep?’ and I said: ‘I swear by Allah, no, but I was going to call out to people for help several times until I heard you hit them with your stick, and you said “Sit down!” And He (SAW) said: ‘If you had gone out, I wouldn’t have been sure that one of them wouldn’t have kidnapped you.’ Then He (SAW) said: ‘Did you see anything?’ I said: ‘Yes, I saw some black men wearing white garments.’ He (SAW) said: ‘Those are Jinn from Nusaybeen who asked me for some provisions (“provisions” means food), so I gave them provisions of decaying bones, or ba'ra [split-hooved non-domestic animal] droppings, or pieces of dung.’ Then I said: ‘Oh Messenger of Allah, what good is that to them?’ And the Messenger of Allah (SAW) said: ‘Indeed they never found a bone on which they did not find some meat on the day it was eaten, nor any dung in which they did not find kernels on the day it was eaten – so don’t any of you ever clean yourself up with bones or droppings or pieces of dung when you come back from relieving yourself!”
