{ And when We sent out a group of Jinn to you to listen to the Qur’an; and when they witnessed it, they said “Pay attention!”; and when it was finished, they went back to their people as warners } Al-ahqaf 29
{ And when they witnessed it } : He is saying: when this group of Jinn witnessed it, those who Allah sent out to His messenger, the Prophet of Allah (SAW) … Qatada related that the Messenger of Allah (SAW) went with Ibn Mas’ud on the night that He called the Jinn to meet. The Prophet (SAW) traced a line around Ibn Mas’ud, then said to him: “Don’t go outside of this.” Then the Prophet (SAW) went to the Jinn, and recited the Qur’an to them, then came back to Ibn Mas’ud and said: “Did you see anything?” He replied: “I heard a loud uproar.” He said: “The Jinn got into a dispute over one of them who was killed, but they resolved it justly; and they asked for provisions.” He said [to the Jinn]: “Bones still have some meat on them for you all, and dung is green vegetables.” And they said: “Oh Messenger of Allah, people have made those things nasty for us!” And so the Prophet (SAW) forbade people to wipe themselves with either of those two things. And when Ibn Mas’ud arrived in Kufa, he saw the Zutt – tall, black people – and they frightened him, and he said: “Can people see them?” And someone said to him: “Indeed these are people from the Zutt.” He said: “They really look similar to the group that was sent out to the Prophet (SAW).”
… Ibn Shihab said: Abu ‘Uthman ibn Shabba Al-Khaza’i told me – and he was from Sham – that Ibn Mas’ud said: The Messenger of Allah (SAW) said to his Companions when He was in Mecca: “Whoever of you would like to go and see what’s going on with the Jinn tonight, let him come.” But none of them went to see except me. And we set out until we were at the high point of Mecca, and He traced a line for me with his foot, then ordered me to sit down inside it. Then He set out until he stood in one position and began to recite the Qur’an. And a multitude of dark figures shrouded him, and got between me and him, so that I could no longer hear his voice. Then they went and began to disperse like clouds and leave, until only a group of them remained. And the Messenger of Allah (SAW) finished prayers at dawn and went off to defecate. Then He came to me and said: “What did the group of them do?” I said: “Those are them, oh Messenger of Allah.” And He grabbed some bones, or some dung, or a skull, and gave it to them as food. Then He forbade anyone from using bones or dung to wipe themselves with.
