Salama ibn Al-Muhabbiq related that someone asked Abu Thabit Sa’d ibn ‘Ubada, when the verse of legal punishments came down (and he was a jealous man): “What do you think if you found a man with Umm Thabit [i.e. his wife] – would you do anything?” He said: “I would strike them both with the sword! Should I wait until I can bring four [witnesses] while in the meantime he has satisfied his desire and left?! Or should I say: I have seen this and that, and you all can give me the legal punishment [i.e. for slandering] and never accept testimony from me ever again?!” This was mentioned to the Prophet (SAW), and He said: “The sword is sufficient as a witness.” Then He said: Actually no – I’m afraid that drunkards and jealous people will start using that as an excuse."
