The Most High is declaring in regards to His servant and His Messenger Muhammad (SAW) that what he brought to people was taught to him by { One mighty in powers } , this being Jibril (prayers and peace upon him) … And the word of the Most High { And he rose up and remained } refers to Jibril (peace be upon him); this is what Al-Hasan, Mujahid, Qatada, and Al-Rabi’ ibn Anas said. { And he was at the highest horizon } : this means that Jibril rose up in the highest horizon; this is what ‘Ikrama and several others said. ‘Ikrama said: The highest horizon is where morning comes from. Mujahid said: It is where the sun rises. And Qatada said: It is where day comes from. Ibn Zayd and others said something similar. … Abdullah ibn Mas’ud related that the Messenger of Allah (SAW) only saw Jibril twice in his true form. One time was when He asked to see him in his true form, and the whole horizon was overwhelmed. The second time, He was with him when he rose up, and this is His word { And he was at the highest horizon } … And this vision of Jibril was not on the night of Israa but before it; the Messenger of Allah (SAW) was on the ground, and Jibril (peace be upon him) descended onto Him, lowered himself toward him, and drew near to Him, in the form in which Allah created him, with six hundred wings. Then He saw him after that on another descent by the farthest sidrah tree [sidrah al-muntaha], that is, on the night of Israa. And this first vision was in the beginning of the call to prophethood, after Jibril (peace be upon him) came to Him the first time. And Allah revealed to him the beginning of surah { Read! } , then the revelation ceased for a while, during which time the Prophet (SAW) went out several times to fall off the mountaintops. But every time they got like this, Jibril called out to Him from the air: “Oh Muhammad! You are truly the Messenger of Allah, and I am Jibril!” … Abdullah said: The Messenger of Allah (SAW) saw Jibril in his true form, and he had six hundred wings, each wing filling the horizon, with embellishments and pearls and rubies falling from his wing – Allah knows how much. Only Ahmad related this.
