It is narrated from Ibn Mas’ud that the Prophet (SAW) said: “I have been ordered to recite the Qur’an to the Jinn – who wants to go with me?” And everyone was silent. Then He said it a second time, then a third time. And Abdullah ibn Mas’ud said: “I’ll go with you, oh Messenger of Allah.” So He set out until He came to Al-hajoun [mountain near Mecca] by the pass of Abu Dubb, then traced a line around me and said: “Don’t go past this.” Then He went over to Al-hajoun, and what seemed like partridges came down to him, rolling down stones with their feet, walking along and beating on their tambourine drums [daff] like women beat on their daffs, until they covered him and I couldn't see him anymore. Then I stood up, but He gestured with his hand for me to sit down. And He recited the Qur’an, and his voice kept on getting louder, and they became glued to the ground until I couldn’t see them anymore. And when He came back to me, He said: “You wanted to come to me?” I said: “Yes, oh Messenger of Allah.” He said: “That was not for you – these are Jinn, who came to listen to the Qur’an, then went back to their people as warners; they asked me for provisions, so I provided them with some bones and dung – so don’t any of you ever wipe with bones or dung!”

‘Ikrama said: There were twelve thousand of them from Mosul Island.

In another narration: He (prayers and peace upon him) set out with me until we came to the mosque by the wall of ‘Awf; He traced a line for me, and a group of them came to him. Our companions said: They were like men of Al-Zutt, and their faces were like large goblets. And they said: “What are you?” He said: “I am the Prophet of Allah.” They said: “And who can testify to that for you?” He said: “This tree – come here, tree!” And it came, dragging its roots, rumbling, until it stood in front of him. And He said: “What do you testify?” It said: “I testify that you are the Messenger of Allah.” Then it returned as it had come, dragging rocks in its roots, rumbling, until it went back to being as it was.

Then it is narrated that He (prayers and peace upon him), when he was done, put his head onto Ibn Mas’ud’s lap and fell asleep. Then He woke up and said: “Is there anything to do ablution with?” He [Ibn Mas’ud] said: “No, except I have a small leather water jug with some wine in it.” And He said: “Isn’t that just dates and water?” And He did ablution with it.
