From ‘Ikrama, who said: The Messenger of Allah (SAW) passed away on a Monday, and was held like that for the rest of the day, and the night, and the next day, until He was buried on Wednesday night. And the people said: Truly the Messenger of Allah (SAW) has not died, but rather his spirit has ascended just as the spirit of Musa ascended. And ‘Umar got up and said: Indeed the Messenger of Allah (SAW) has not died, but rather his spirit has ascended just as the spirit of Musa ascended; I swear by Allah that the Messenger of Allah (SAW) will not die, until He cuts off people’s hands and their tongues. And ‘Umar kept on talking until the corners of his mouth were foaming from everything he was promising and saying. Then ‘Abbas got up and said: Indeed the Messenger of Allah (may Allah Most High pray over him and salute him) has died, and indeed he is a man, and indeed he stinks like people do! Oh people, bury your companion! For Allah gives him more honour than to make him die two deaths. Would He make any of you die, and then make him die twice? Allah gives him more honour than that. Oh people, bury your companion! If it were as you all say, then it is not too hard for Allah to seek him from the dirt. Indeed the Messenger of Allah (SAW), I swear by Allah he did not die until He had made the way plain and clear – for He made permissible what is permissible and forbade what is forbidden, had marital relations and divorced, waged war and made peace; and there was no better shepherd of a flock, whose guardian would lead them to the tops of mountains, beating thorny trees out of the way for them with his pole, patching with mud the gaps in their watering troughs with his hand, more hardworking, more diligent than the Messenger of Allah (SAW) among you all. Oh people, bury your companion! And Umm Ayman began to cry, and they asked her: Oh Umm Ayman, are you crying over the Messenger of Allah (SAW)? She said: I swear by Allah indeed I am not crying over the Messenger of Allah (SAW) because I know that He has gone to that which is better for him than this world, but indeed I am crying because the tidings from heaven have ceased.
