Al-Awza’i said: Yahya ibn Abi Kathir related to him that Ka’b was asked: What is under this earth? And he said: Water. Someone asked: And what is under the water? He said: The earth. Someone asked: And what is under the earth? He said: The water. Someone asked: And what is under the water? He said: The earth. Someone asked: And what is under the earth? He said: The water. Someone asked: And what is under the water? He said: The earth. Someone asked: And what is under the earth? He said: The water. Someone asked: And what is under the water? He said: The earth. Someone asked: And what is under the earth? He said: The rock. Someone asked: And what is under the rock? He said: The angel. Someone asked: And what is under the angel? He said: A whale whose two ends hang from the Throne. Someone asked: And what is under the whale? He said: Air and darkness; and knowledge ceases.
