Anyone who drinks [alcohol], being an adult of sound mind, Muslim, deliberately, knowingly, and aware of its prohibition, is to receive the punishment, this being forty lashes for a free man and twenty for a slave, with hands, sandals, or the edges of garments. It is also permissible to use a whip, but if he dies from being whipped, indemnity for him is due.
