تفسير البغوي الحج ٥٢

The word of the Mighty and Sublime : { Every messenger and prophet that We have sent forth before you, when they recited, Satan cast something into what they intended } and the rest of the verse. Ibn ‘Abbas, Muhammad ibn Ka’ib Al-Quradhi, and other expositors have said: When the Messenger of Allah (SAW) saw his people turning away from him, and it distressed him to see them leaving what He had brought them from Allah, He wished in his heart to bring them something from Allah that would draw him and his people closer, for them to cling to their faith. And one day while He was in the assembly of the Quraish, Allah Most High sent down Surah Al-najm, and the Messenger of Allah (SAW) recited it until he reached His word: “Have you all considered Al-lat, and Al-‘Uzza, and Manat, the third, the other one?”, and Satan cast onto his tongue what He was telling himself and wishing for: “Those lofty herons – indeed their intercession is hoped for”. And when the Quraish heard this, they rejoiced at it; and the Messenger of Allah (SAW) continued in his recitation of the entire surah. And He prostrated at the end of the surah, and the Muslims prostrated at his prostration, and all the idolaters in the mosque prostrated.
