Al-Hakim Al-Tirmidhi related, from ‘Umar ibn Al-Khattab, who said: The Messenger of Allah (SAW) came to me, and I could see the sadness on his face. He grabbed me by the beard and said: Indeed we belong to Allah and to Him we return! Jibril came to me just now and said: “Indeed we belong to Allah and to Him we return.” I said: Yes indeed, we belong to Allah and to Him we return – what’s that about oh Jibril?! He said: Surely your nation [ummah] will fall into calamity a little while after you, not long after. I said: Calamity from disbelief [kufr] or calamity from being misguided? He said: There will be all of that. I said: But from where, since I have left the book of Allah with them?! He said: They will be misguided by the book of Allah, and the beginning of this will be from their reciters and their emirs; the emirs will deny people their rights, will not grant them, and people will fight each other. The reciters will follow the whims of the emirs, and they will push them deeper into error, and they will not relent. I said: Oh Jibril, those who are saved from them – how will they be saved? He said: With restraint and forbearance – if they are given what is theirs, they take it, but if it is withheld from them, they let it go.
