Sabigh ibn ‘Isl arrived in Medina and began to ask questions about the ambiguous verses in the Qur’an and about some other things. News of this reached ‘Umar (may Allah be pleased with him), and ‘Umar sent for the man and had him brought to him, having had some palm branch sticks prepared for him. When the man arrived, ‘Umar said to him: Who are you? The man said: I am Sabigh the servant of Allah. And ‘Umar (may Allah be pleased with him) said: And I am ‘Umar the servant of Allah. Then he got up towards him and beat his head with a palm branch stick, cutting his head open, and continued to beat him until blood ran down his face. And the man said: Enough oh Leader of the Believers! I swear by Allah all the questions I had in my head are gone.
