Zaid ibn Thabit said: We used to recite: “If an older man and an older woman adulterate, stone the two of them unequivocably.” Marwan said: Did you not write this down in the copy of the Qur’an? He said: We mentioned this, while ‘Umar ibn Al-Khattab was with us, and He said: I can fix that for you all. We said: But how? He said: A certain man came to the Prophet (SAW), and talked about this and that, and mentioned stoning; he said: Oh Messenger of Allah, write down the verse of stoning for me. He said: I can’t right now. (This or something similar.) … indicating that the verse of stoning used to be written down, and its recitation was abrogated but its ruling remained in effect.
