From Jabir ibn Abdullah, who said: Abu Bakr went in to ask permission to see the Messenger of Allah (SAW), and he found people sitting at His door, none of them having been granted permission. Then Abu Bakr was granted permission, and he went in. Then ‘Umar came forward, asked permission, and it was granted to him, and he found the Prophet (SAW) sitting, depressed and silent, with his women around Him. He [‘Umar] said: Indeed I will say something that will make the Prophet (SAW) laugh. And he said: Oh Messenger of Allah, if you had only seen Bint Kharija [Habiba bint Kharija, Abu Bakr’s fourth wife] when she asked me for some spending money, and I got up and slapped her neck. And the Messenger of Allah (SAW) laughed, and said: The women are here around me, as you can see, asking me for spending money. So Abu Bakr got up to ‘Aishah and slapped her neck, and ‘Umar got up to Hafsah and slapped her neck, both of them saying: You women are asking the Messenger of Allah (SAW) for something that He does not have. But the women said: We swear by Allah, we never ask the Messenger of Allah (SAW) for something that He does not have.
