{ Oh Prophet! Say to your wives: If you all desire the life of this world and its embellishment, then come, I will provide you with delight and fully release you; but if you desire Allah and His Messenger and the dwelling of the hereafter, then indeed Allah has prepared a great reward for those of you who do good } Al-ahzab 28-29

It is said that the reason why “making them choose” [al-takhyeer, i.e. Al-ahzab 28-29] was imposed was because one of His wives asked Him to make her a gold ring, but He made her a silver ring and overlaid it with gold – some say with saffron. However she refused unless it was of gold. And so the verse of “making them choose” came down, and He made the women choose.
