Ibn ‘Aqil said: Whenever a liking to lesbianism becomes evident among women, they must be forbidden to be alone with each other. Lesbianism is adultery, although the legal punishment is not obligatory, rather a discretionary punishment [ta'zir], since it is without penetration; it is like intercourse of a man with a man with no vagina involved.
