Al-'Alaa ibn Ziyad said: There is no problem with it [masturbation] – we used to do it when we went on military raids … Al-Hasan Al-Basri, Al-Dahhak ibn Muzahim, and others with them said something similar. Ibn 'Abbas said: It is better than adultery, although marital relations [nikah] with a slave girl would be better. But Anas ibn Malik said: Cursed is he who does it. And Al-Shafi'i said: It is not permitted.
