It is narrated from Malik: Whoever insults Abu Bakr is to be flogged, and whoever insults ‘Aishah must be killed. He was asked: Why? He said: Whoever tosses her [i.e. slanders her] has opposed the Qur’an. … Allah Most High made mention of the accusations of the hypocrites against ‘Aishah, and said { Were it not, when you heard it, for you to say: It is not for us to talk of this. Exalted are You! This is great slander } [Al-nur 16]. He praised himself for absolving her from evil, just as He praised himself for absolving himself, Mighty and Sublime, from evil. And this bears witness to what Malik said regarding killing someone who insults ‘Aishah. The meaning here – but Allah knows better – is that Allah Most High made it a grave offense to insult her, just as He made it a grave offense to insult Him [the Prophet]; and an insult to her is an insult to Him (peace be upon him). And He made insulting His Prophet (peace be upon him) and harming him equivalent to harming Himself Most High. The judgment for someone who harms Him Most High is to be killed; for someone who harms His Prophet, the same, as we have presented.
