'Aishah said: Indeed it was part of Allah's favour towards me that the Messenger of Allah (SAW) passed away in my house and on my day, while in my bosom, and that Allah brought together my saliva and his saliva when he died. 'Abd Al-Rahman came in to see me, and he had a teeth-cleaning stick [siwak] in his hand, and I was holding up the Messenger of Allah (SAW). I saw him looking at it, and I realized that he wanted the siwak, so I said: Shall I get it for you? He nodded yes, and I passed it to him, but it was too tough for him, so I said: Shall I soften it for you? He nodded yes, so I softened it for him. And He had with him a small pot, or a container – 'Umar was not sure – with water in it, and He started to put his hands in the water and wipe his face with them, saying: There is no god but Allah ["La ilaha illa Allah"]; truly death has its agonies. Then He raised his hand and began to say "With the most exalted companion!" until He was taken, and his hand fell limp.
