Ibn ‘Abbas said regarding the word of the Most High { It is not for you to harm the Messenger of Allah } : This came down regarding a certain man who was intent on marrying one of the Prophet’s (SAW) women after him. Someone said to Sufyan: Was it ‘Aishah? He said: That’s what they say. Muqatil ibn Hayyan and ‘Abd Al-Rahman ibn Zaid ibn Aslam said this as well. It is mentioned by way of his chain of narration from Al-Suddi, that the one who had this in mind was Talha ibn ‘Ubaid Allah (may Allah be pleased with him), until the warning came down regarding its prohibition. For this reason all scholars have come together in agreement that whichever wives of the Messenger of Allah (SAW) that He dies and leaves behind, it was forbidden for anyone else to marry them after him, since they are his wives in this world and the next, and they are the mothers of the Believers.
