He (SAW) used to flatter the Disbelievers [Kuffar] and the hypocrites, act nicely towards them in companionship, overlook their faults, put up with their hurtfulness, and patiently endure their coarseness, such as would not be possible for us to endure from them nowadays. And He would treat them kindly with gifts and favors; Allah Most High ordered this for him; the Most High said: { You will never cease to discover some treachery on their part, except a few of them, but forgive them, and be forbearing; indeed Allah loves those who do good } [Al-ma’ida 13]. And the Most High said: { Push back with what is better, so that he who is at enmity with you may be as an intimate associate } [Fussilat 34]. This was because people needed to come together in the beginning of Islam, and for anything that was said to agree on it. But when it was firmly established, and Allah made it victorious over all religion, He killed whoever He could, and became notorious.
