We can say that Muslims are in agreement that legitimate purification [tahara] consists of two kinds of purification: purification from hadath [bodily occurrences that make one ritually impure] and purification from khabath [harmful external impurities]. And they are in agreement that there are three manners of purity from hadath: ablution [wudu’], full washing/bathing [ghusl], and a substitute for these two, this being dry wiping with dust [tayammum].
