Intimate contact with a menstruating woman falls into several categories; the first of these is having intimacy with her by sex in the vagina, which is forbidden by universal consensus among Muslims, according to the texts of the Noble Qur’an and the sound sunnah. Our companions have said: If a Muslim considers the act of sex with a menstruating woman in her vagina, he has become a disbeliever and an apostate. If a man who does not consider this permissible does it, because he forgets, is unaware of the menstruation, unaware of its prohibition, or is compelled, there is no sin on him and no expiation needed. If he has intercourse willfully, aware of the menstruation and the prohibition, choosing to do so, he has committed a grave transgression.
