Hammam ibn Munabbih related that he heard Abu Huraira say: The Messenger of Allah (SAW) said: Prayer is not accepted from anyone who has had an occurrence [hadath], until he performs ablution. A man from Hadramut said: What is hadath, oh Abu Huraira? He said: Passing gas [fusaa, no sound] or farting [durat, with sound].
