‘Aishah related that the Prophet’s (SAW) wives would go out at night, whenever they needed to relieve themselves, to Al-Manasi’, a wide-open plain. And ‘Umar used to say to the Prophet (SAW): Veil your women. But the Messenger of Allah (SAW) did not do it. Early one night, Sawdah bint Zam’a, the wife of the Prophet (SAW), went out; she was a tall woman. ‘Umar called to her: “Indeed we’ve seen you, Oh Sawdah!”, hoping that the issue of the hijab would be revealed. And so Allah sent down the hijab verse.
