From Jabir, who said: The Messenger of Allah (SAW) said: Wiping with stones [istijmar] is to be done with an odd number, the casting of the stones is to be done with an odd number, the ritual walk between Safa and Marwa is an odd number of times, the circumambulation is an odd number of times; and whenever any of you wipes himself with stones, he should wipe with an odd number.
