{ Truly the worst of animals in the sight of Allah are those who have disbelieved, for they have not believed. Those of them with whom you have made a pledge but then they broke their pledge every time, not being devout. If indeed you get to them in warfare, use them to drive away those who come after them, that perchance they might be reminded } Al-anfal 55-57

The Most High is making it known that the worst of what crawls on the face of the earth are those who have disbelieved, since they do not believe; those who, every time they make a covenant, break it, and every time they affirm it with oaths, they violate it. { Not being devout } : that is, they have no fear of Allah of any of the sins they have committed. { If indeed you get to them in warfare } : that is, you overcome them and triumph over them in warfare; { use them to drive away those who come after them } : that is, make an example by punishing them severly; Ibn ‘Abbas, Al-Hasan Al-Basri, Al-Dahhak, Al-Suddi, ‘Ataa Al-Kurasani, and Ibn ‘Uyaina all said this. The meaning of this is: Make their punishment harsh and massacre them, so that those Arab and other enemies like them will fear, and it will serve as an example to them. { That perchance they might be reminded } ; Al-Suddi said: He is saying that perchance they will be careful not to break any pacts and have something similar done to them.
