The correct view, which the majority of Muslims hold, is that whoever fights to take hold of possessions, by whatever means of fighting, he is unmistakeably a warrior, just as whoever of the disbelievers fights the Muslims, by whatever means of fighting, he is part of the warring party. And whoever of the Muslims fights the disbelievers with a sword, a spear, arrows, stones, or a truncheon, he is a mujahid in the cause of Allah.
