Nafi’ said: Ibn ‘Umar (may Allah be pleased with them both) related to me that the Messenger of Allah (SAW) brought him out on the day of Uhud, when he was fourteen years old, “but He did not allow me to go; He brought me out on the day of Khandaq [the Trench], when I was fifteen, and then He allowed me.” Nafi’ said: I went to see ‘Umar ibn ‘Abd Al-‘Aziz, who was caliph at the time, and I told him this hadith, and he said: Indeed this is the threshold between children and grown men. And he wrote to his officers that they should allocate to anyone who had reached fifteen years of age.
