‘Ikrama related that ‘Ali killed some people who had renounced their Islam; he burned them with fire. News of this reached Ibn ‘Abbas, and he said: If I were to have killed them I wouldn’t have burned them, because the Messenger of Allah (SAW) said: “Whoever changes …” or He said: “Whoever turns away from his religion, kill him, but do not punish with Allah’s punishment, that is, by fire.” And news of what Ibn ‘Abbas said reached ‘Ali, and he said: Screw Ibn ‘Abbas!
