If one fears that they will break their treaty, it is permissible for him to default on the treaty with them, based on the word of Allah Most High: { And if indeed you fear betrayal from people, default on them likewise } [Al-anfal 58]. That is, let them know that their treaty is being broken, so that you and them are both equally aware – it is not sufficient for this to occur in one’s heart – so that they might have a clear sign that gives evidence of what is feared.
