وكان يلبس الدِرع والخوذة ويتقلد السيف ويحمل الرمح والقوس العربية وكان يتترس بالترس وكان يحب الخُيلاء في الحرب وقال إن منها ما يحبه الله ومنها ما يُبغضه الله فأما الخيلاء التي يحبها الله فإختيال الرجل بنفسه عند اللقاء وإختياله عند الصدقة وأما التي يبغض الله عز وجل فإختياله في البغي والفخر
زاد المعاد لإبن قيم الجهاد والغزوات
He would wear armor, a headpiece, put on a sword, carry a spear and a bow, and He would shield himself with a shield. And He loved being conceited in war; He said: Indeed in it there are things that Allah loves and things that Allah abhors. The conceit that Allah loves is for a man to flaunt himself in confrontations and to show off in giving charity, but the conceit that Allah Mighty and Sublime abhors is for a man to show off in trespasses and in boasting.
