{ Those who have believed say: “Were that a surah would be sent down”; but when a surah that is firm was sent down, and fighting was mentioned in it, you saw those with sickness in their hearts look at you with the look of someone whose death is looming over them; it would have been worthier of them to obey and say good things. Then when the matter was decided, if they had remained true to Allah it would have been better for them } Muhammad 20-21

They were invoking aspirations for jihad, and wanted it with their tongues, saying: { Were that a surah would be sent down } : meaning jihad; { but when a surah was sent down } : and in it they were ordered to carry out what they had wanted and aspired to, they groveled around and it was agonizing for them … { Those with sickness in their hearts } : those who wavered and were not on firm footing … { If they had remained true to Allah } : regarding the aspirations they alleged they had for jihad, or if they had remained true to their tongues concerning their belief and the soft voices in their hearts regarding it.
