{ And wage jihad for Allah as is due His jihad } Al-hajj 78

The word of the Most High: { And wage jihad for Allah as is due His jihad } : it is said that by this He means jihad against the Disbelievers [Kuffar]; and it is said that this refers to compliance with everything Allah has ordered and cessation of everything that Allah has forbidden; that is: Wage jihad on yourselves by obeying Allah and warding off your passions, wage jihad on Satan by warding off his tempting whispers, on oppressors by warding off their oppression, and on the Disbelievers by warding off their disbelief. Ibn ‘Atiyya said, and Muqatil said: This verse is abrogated by the word of the Most High: { So fear Allah as best you can } [Al-taghabun 16]; likewise HibatAllah said: Indeed His word { as is due His jihad } and His word in the other verse { as is due fear of Him } are abrogated by the “relief” to be just what one is capable of concerning these orders, and there is no need to presume abrogation. This then is the intended meaning of the first ruling, since uneasiness is not eliminated from { as is due His jihad } . Sa’id ibn Al-Musayyib narrated that the Messenger of Allah (SAW) said: The best part of your religion [deen] is the easiest part. And Abu Ja’far Al-Nahhas said: This pertains to that for which abrogation is not permissible, since it is a man’s obligation, as Haywa ibn Shuraih narrated, directly from the Prophet (SAW), who said: A mujahid is one who wages jihad on himself for Allah Mighty and Sublime.
