{ Indeed Allah granted you victory in many territories, and on the day of Hunayn, when you relished your abundance, although it was of no use to you, for the land grew narrow to you even as it became spacious, then you turned away in retreat. Then Allah sent down His reaffirming tranquility over His Messenger and over the Believers, and He sent down troops which you did not see, and punished those who disbelieved; and this is the recompense of the Disbelievers } Al-tawba 25-26

Ibn Juraij related from Mujahid that this is the first verse that came down in this surah in which the Most High mentions to the Believers His favor over them and His benevolence with them in granting them victory in the many places where they went on attacks with His Messenger. Moreover this is from Him Most High, by His support and decree, not by their numbers or their reinforcements; and He points out to them that the victory is from Him whether the unit is small or large. Indeed on the day of Hunayn they relished their large numbers, however this was not at all of any advantage to them, as they turned away in retreat, all but a few of them with the Messenger of Allah (SAW). Then He sent down His victory and His support over His Messenger and over the Believers who were with him – as we will clarify in detail, Allah Most High willing – to let them know that the victory is from Him Most High alone and by His provision, even if the unit is small. How many small groups have overcome large groups by the permission of Allah? And Allah is with those who are steadfast.
