{ Oh Prophet! Incite the Believers to fight; if there are twenty steadfast among you, that they would overcome two hundred, and if there are a hundred among you, that they would overcome a thousand of those who have disbelieved, since they are a people who do not comprehend. Now Allah has given you all relief, and is aware that there is weakness in you; so if there are a hundred steadfast among you, that they would overcome two hundred; and if there are a thousand, that they would overcome two thousand; and Allah is with those who are steadfast } Al-anfal 65-66

From Ibn ‘Abbas (may Allah be pleased with them both), who said: When { If there are twenty steadfast among you, that they would overcome two hundred } came down, this was very hard on the Muslims, when it was made obligatory for them that one man not run away from ten. So the “relief” came and He said: { Now Allah has given you all relief, and is aware that there is weakness in you; so if there are a hundred steadfast among you, that they would overcome two hundred } . Ibn ‘Abbas said: And when Allah relieved the number for them, steadfastness diminished by the same degree to which it had been lightened for them.
