{ Those of the Believers who sit out, other than the impaired, are not on the same level as those who wage jihad in the way of Allah with their wealth and with themselves; Allah has preferred those who wage jihad with their wealth and with themselves by a degree over those who sit it out, but Allah has promised good things to both, although Allah has favored those who wage jihad by a great reward over those who sit it out } Al-nisaa 95

Those of the Shafi’i school have said: This verse substantiates that striving in the supererogatory deeds [nawafil; i.e. above and beyond the obligatory] is better than striving in having sex [nikah], because for someone who takes up jihad, the remaining obligations are lifted, and even if he were obliged to take it up, it would still count as among the nawafil. The verse implies the preferentiality of all mujahideen, whether those who are obliged or those who make the extra effort, over those who sit around; someone who strives in nikah is still sitting out from jihad. It is therefore affirmed that the striving of someone sent out in jihad is better than striving in nikah.

Ibn ‘Adil, Al-lubab fi ‘Ulum Al-kitab [Kernels of Knowledge of the Book], Surah Al-nisaa, Section: effort in the supererogatory deeds [nawafil] is better than marital relations
