{ They ask you about the sacred months – is there fighting during them? Say: Fighting during them is a great sin, although hindering from the cause of Allah, disbelief in Him and the Sacred Mosque, and driving its people out of it, are even greater in the sight of Allah; and sedition is worse than killing. They will not stop fighting you until they turn you away from your religion if they could; and whoever turns away from his religion and dies in disbelief - these are the ones whose deeds will come to nothing, neither in this world nor the next, and these are the inhabitants of Hellfire, abiding there forever } Al-baqara 217

{ And sedition is worse than killing } : Mujahid and others said: Sedition [fitnah] here is disbelief, that is, your disbelief is worse than our killing those people. The majority say that the meaning of sedition here is that they caused the Muslims to be drawn away from their religion to the point of destruction, and this is a more severe crime than you all killing people during a sacred month.
