تفسير الثعالبي

{ Fighting is ordained for you, being something you dislike; but perhaps you dislike something that is good for you, and perhaps you like something that is bad for you; and Allah knows but you do not know } Al-baqara 216

{ Ordained } : meaning it has been made obligatory; it rests unanimous that jihad is the collective duty of Muhammad’s (SAW) people [ummah]. The word of the Most High: { perhaps you dislike something … } to the end of the verse; some people say: “Perhaps” from Allah is an obligation. The meaning is: Perhaps you dislike the hardship in jihad, although it is good for you, in that you prevail, and are victorious, and acquire spoils, and are rewarded; and whoever dies, dies a martyr. And perhaps you prefer to be gentle and refrain from fighting, although this is bad for you, in that you are prevailed over, and humiliated, and you end up as nothing.
