{ Fight in the cause of Allah those who fight you, and do not transgress; indeed Allah does not love those who transgress. And kill them wherever you get to them, and drive them away from where they drove you away; sedition is more severe than killing. But do not fight them at the Sacred Mosque until they fight you there, then if they fight you, kill them; such is the retribution of the Disbelievers. If they cease, indeed Allah is forgiving and merciful. And fight them until there is no more sedition and religion belongs to Allah; and if they cease, there is no hostility except against those who oppress } Al-baqara 190-193

Regarding the word of the Most High { And kill them wherever you get to them } : It is said that the first verse was abrogated by this verse. The basis of getting to them is being astute and observant of affairs; the meaning is “And kill them wherever you see them fighting and you are able to kill them”. … { And kill them wherever you get to them } : that is, wherever you come across them in non-sacred or sacred occasions. This verse became abrogated by the word of the Most High: { But do not fight them at the Sacred Mosque } ; then the verse of the sword in the “Absolution” surah [Al-tawba] in turn abrogated it, making this a verse both abrogating and abrogated. … { And fight them } : that is, the Idolaters; { until there is no more sedition } : that is, idolatry [shirk], meaning in effect: “Fight them until they enter into Islam”; for nothing else except Islam is to be accepted from the heathen [wathani, idol worshippers]; if they refuse, they are killed.
