Then Khalid told them [the people of Al-Hira]: Indeed I call you to Allah and to worship Him, and to Islam; if you accept, what is ours is yours and our obligations are your obligations; but if you refuse, then pay jizya; and if you still refuse, then we will bring people to you who love death as much as you all love to drink wine. … From Al-Sha’bi who said: Khalid wrote to Hurmuz before he set out with Azadhiba – the father of the Ziyadhiba who were in Al-Yamamah; at the time Hurmuz held a vacancy. He wrote: Now then, yield into Islam and be safe, or concede to being under safeguard [dhimma] for yourself and your people, and accede to the jizya; otherwise, there is no one to blame but yourself; I will bring to you people who love death as much as you love life.
