‘Utba ibn ‘Abd Al-Sulami (may Allah be pleased with him) – he was of the Companions – related that the Messenger of Allah (SAW) said: There are three kinds of casualties: a believing man who sets out with his life and his wealth, faces the enemy, and fights him until he is killed; he is the examined one, in the tent of Allah beneath His throne, exceeded by the prophets only by their status of prophethood. Then a believing man who fears sins and wrongdoings for himself, faces the enemy, and fights until he is killed; and that is like a rinse flowing under his sins and wrongdoings; indeed the sword wipes away sins. And it will be said to him: Enter from whichever of the eight gates of Jannah that you wish. For indeed there are eight gates; Hell has seven gates; some of them are better than others (that is, the gates of Jannah). Then a hypocrite who sets out with his life and his wealth, and fights until he is killed; he is in Hellfire; indeed the sword does not wipe away hypocrisy.
