From ‘Utba ibn ‘Abd Al-Sulami, one of the Prophet’s (SAW) Companions, who said: The Messenger of Allah (SAW) said: There are three kinds of killings: a believing man who fights in the cause of Allah with himself and his wealth until he faces the enemy and fights them until he is killed; he is the proud martyr in the tent of Allah beneath His throne, exceeded by the prophets only by their status of prophethood. Then a believing man who fears sins and wrongdoings for himself, and wages jihad with himself and his wealth in the cause of Allah until he faces the enemy, and fights until he is killed, his sins and wrongdoings wiped away; indeed the sword wipes away sins. And He will be admitted by any of the gates of Jannah that he wishes; indeed it has eight gates – and Hell has seven gates – some of which are better than others. Then finally a hypocrite who wages jihad with himself and his wealth in the cause of Allah until he faces the enemy and fights in the cause of Allah until he is killed; indeed he is in Hellfire – the sword does not wipe away hypocrisy.
