{ Oh you who have believed! Shall I attest to you all of a transaction that will deliver you from painful punishment? That you believe in Allah and His Messenger, and wage jihad for the sake of Allah with your wealth and with yourselves; this is better for you, if only you knew. He will forgive your sins and will admit you into gardens below which rivers flow and pleasant dwelling places in gardens of Eden; this is the great victory. And other things that you love – support from Allah and impending victory. So give the good news to the Believers! } Al-saff 10-13

The word of the Most High: { Oh you who have believed! Shall I attest to you all of a transaction } ; Muqatil said: This came down regarding ‘Uthman ibn Madh’un. This was because he said to the Messenger of Allah (SAW): If only you would give me permission, I would divorce Khawlah, become a monk, get castrated, and prohibit meat, and I would not ever sleep at night or break fast during the day. But the Messenger of Allah (SAW) said: Truly it is my way of life [sunnah] to have marital relations [nikah], and there is no monasticism in Islam; indeed the monasticism of my ummah is jihad for the sake of Allah, and the castration of my ummah is fasting; and do not forbid the delights that Allah has made permissible for you; and it is my way of life to sleep and then arise, break fast, and fast; and whoever turns away from my way of life is not of me. Then ‘Uthman said: I swear by Allah, I wish, oh Prophet of Allah, for whatever transaction is most pleasing to Allah, and I will make the deal for it. And so the verse came down.
