{ Those who have believed say } : seeking jihad; { Were that } : Why is there not; { a surah would be sent down } : that mentions jihad; { but when a surah that is firm was sent down } : that is, nothing in it has been abrogated; { and fighting was mentioned in it } : that is, a call to it; { you saw those with sickness in their hearts } : that is, doubt – these are the hypocrites; { look at you with the look of someone whose death is looming over them } : fainting, fearful of it and averse towards it, that is, they are fearful of fighting and are averse towards it.
